2008 Albums of the Year TOP 10

1. Miss Leslie – Between the Whiskey & the Wine $30 In the end a very easy choice. I would also rate this and Bobbie Cryner’s self titled albums as the two best female albums we have ever had. This cd is great for 3 reasons: Songs/production/style. Miss Leslie wrote all the songs and a finer bunch of honky tonk songs you would not find anywhere. Originality is something so sadly lacking in today’s music. The production by Ricky Davis, Leslie’s husband is so wonderfully balanced and even though he has played on Dale Watson albums his performances reach a new height on this album. But Leslie has done what no woman has ever done and that is make an entire album in the style of George Jones. Whether up tempo or ballad she (seemingly) unwittingly captures the nuances of the great one. It is that good.

2. Joey & Rory – Life of a Song $30 The more you play it the better it gets. It is an unplugged album but “unplugged” has never rocked more than on “Cheater Cheater” the fabulous track (among many) from this debut album. They harmonise with Don & Phil precision and write songs which always sound new & fre

sh. Nothing hackneyed. The Rory (the bloke) co-write with Catherine Britt “Sweet Emmylou” proves that whoever is picking Britt’s songs for her should be sacked. An absolute must have. An absolute must have. It needed to be said twice!!

3. Scotty Campbell – “Smokin’ & Drinkin” $30 Scotty is a Canadian but is firmly rooted in the Texas way of things and if (after hearing this gem) I told you he was Dale Watson’s first cousin you would make a strong mental association and not be surprised at all. I don’t think he is related BTW but hell he could be!! There is a great shuffle rhythm from bassist Peter Sisk and drummer Jack Diamond even on the ballads. Campbell has not written as much as on his previous albums but his contributions are the best. The title track and “Stumblin’ Round the Room” are as good examples of honky tonk music as you would ever hear. He is also credited with “Jeannie in a Bottle” and before someone says nay! (as I did), let me say that it is not the song recorded by the great Darrell McCall but a new killer boozy ballad. So good you wish he had done more originals. A great lyric and I think I even prefer it to the other “Jeannie in a Bottle”. 13 songs!

4. Claude Diamond – “On the Loose’ $30 The third album from the man who but for the grace of God and (a self proclaimed) weakness for the perceived better things in life could have been revered like John Prine. In these quarters he is so revered. His songs are of the highest quality and his own interpretations are of the highest level. Many have the theme of bad luck running through them. For example on the hilarious “No Pink Cadillac” in which the singer seeks shelter in a pink Cadillac to avoid the wrath of a “dangerous man” who wanted him dead for fooling around with his wife. Just so happens the Cadillac was stolen. Talk about bad luck!! “Easier Than Mine” is about generational change. “Sweet Memory” is another example on the man down on his luck and has some great lines with delicious irony attached to them. “Sweaty Limbs & Tangled Sheets” needs no explanation but as far as cheatin’ songs go it is a classic. “He Knows About Me” is again full of wonderful self deprecating lines, and develops into Claude’s version of a gospel song. A wonderful songwriter with an equally great delivery. He is the musical equivalent of Robert Redford’s “The Natural”!!

5. Amber Digby – “Passion, Pride & What Might Have Been” $30 The great Amber down at number five!! The competition is stiff. If you notice the above 4 are all writers and Amber has yet to develop in that area. That is not a criticism as nobody sings them like she does and the covers she does are simply without equal in the history of country music. A must have item.

6. Charlie Craig – “The Hitmaker” $28 Responsible for Alan Jackson’s “Wanted” and Keith Whitley’s “I Wonder Do You Think of Me” and has a voice that is right up there with both artists. Apart from his own versions of these 2 gems every other song is of the highest ilk and demands covers.

7.Patty Loveless “Sleepless Nights” $32 Covers, but with the great Patty in charge you know you are getting the best. As always pure country and with featured duets with Vince Gill on the title track and Australian Jedd Hughes on “That’s All it Took” you know it is quality all the way. But her vocal on the Porter/Dolly classic “The Pain of Loving You” is simply breath taking.

8. Jamey Johnson “That Lonesome Song” $30 Second great album from the man with the wonderful deep voice. By the way we would like to tell you why he was dropped from his first major label but we need to think about the kiddies. “Somewhere Between Haggard & Jones” is a superbly clever song as are they all.

9 Hank Williams III “Damn Right Rebel Proud” $32 His 4th country album is chock full of gems….from the laugh out loud “The Grand Ol Opry Ain’t So Grand Anymore” to the scary (at first listen anyway) “Candidate for Suicide” this is a must. It comes in a clean version as well as the standard “explicit” version.
****We have one only Hank III “Damn Right” t-shirt XL for $35. Don’t worry t is new and still sealed.

10.Leona Williams- “New Patches” $30 She continues to put out great album after great album and with the wonderful Justin Trevino at the helm and her own fabulous songs you know it is going to continue that trend.

Best Special Project

A tie between:
Always Lift Him Up: ATribute to the Music of Blind Alfred Reed” $30 West Virginia Hall of Fame legend who has a bunch of songs reflecting the morals and values of the Depression era. He only recorded 20 songs and this album covers 19 with great contributions from Tim & Mollie O’Brien, Kathy Mattea, Connie Smith, Charlie McCoy (a rare but great vocal), Ray Benson, Little Jimmy Dickens plus some fine West Virginia singers though actress Ann Magnuson is probably best on “Why Do You Bob Your Hair, Girls” which show Blind Alfred’s values may be a tad on the prudish side.
Songs of the Year $30 Only sold at the Crackerbarrel chain of stores and I can only say the proof of the greatness is in the listening. Why would you want to hear anyone apart from Vern Gosdin doing “Chiseled in Stone”? Well, Randy Travis changes all that. George Jones teaming with Dierks Bentley delivers a great version of “Murder on Music Row” and Trace Adkins knockout vocal on “Sunday Morning Coming Down” reminds us what a killer vocalist he is. Even the ultimate lightweights rise above their station. Jo Dee Messina is superb on Vince Gill’s “When I Call Your Name” and talented new artists (eg Blake Shelton’s “The Gambler”) show all may not be as diabolical as we sometimes paint. But then again there are still the Taylor Swift’s of the world (not on this thankfully) would prove otherwise.

Best Reissue

Hank Williams “The Unreleased Recordings” Time Life 3cdbox $90
First of 3 sets. All are licensed from the estate of Hank Williams which specifically means Jett & Hank jnr Williams. These are the Mother’s Best Flour shows which were recorded to 16” acetates and they actually sound better than the original MGM recordings. Further more there are tracks he never commercially recorded such as “Cool Water’ and “Cherokee Boogie” plus excellent versions of his classics. This is the first of 3 boxes. Don’t miss it.

Bob Wills & the Texas Playboys “The Tiffany Transcriptions”
The Tiffany Transcriptions are simply the best Bob wills recordings. Better than the Bear Family Columbia boxes, better than anything. There is an infectious joy about them that creates the best performances. There were also a different breed of musicians, some of who had come from a jazz background where improvisation was the order of the day and that worked well with Wills. Tommy Duncan on lead vocals was in a class of his own though Wills own vocals were a joy to hear especially on the call and response of “Four or Five Times”. I have this idiotic idea that Bob sounds like Percy Kilbride (aka Pa Kettle) when he sings. I reckon it adds to the appreciation!! The main rhythm section was Bob’s brother Billy Jack on bass and Johnny Cuviello on drums. New musicians in this post war line up included Tiny Moore on electric mandolin (to save money he would only use one lot of strings and not two as is the case with mandolins) and sounded like a jazz guitarist. Lester “Junior” Barnard played in a down home bluesy style that obviously pleased Wills judging by his intros. Listen to his calls on the fantastic “Barnard Blues”. Bob half improvises a vocal. My, he is having a great time. Herb Remington & Noel Boggs were extremely formidable steel guitar players. Whereas in the pre war period Wills had a number of horn men the chores were left mainly to Alex Brashear on muted trumpet. Alex’s notes dart in and out like an Ali jab. Joe Holley is the main featured fiddler. Wills himself may have been “the best damn fiddle player” according to Hag but his involvement is more as band leader. Previously these were issued on Rhino as individual releases but have been expanded and remastered and assembled in this box set. All the covers of the Rhino cds have been nicely released in miniaturised versions. These were recorded in the 1946-47 period but the sound is sensational. It seems the 16” transcription discs must have been the ideal non-tape method of storing sounds, something echoed in the recent Hank Williams Mothers Best Unissued Recordings. The songs on this are a mix of Wills, standards of the day, big band, other swing band covers and more. I would call this a must have & have followed my own lead.
One thing, do not say I like Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys except for the way Bob Wills interjects all the time. Not being generally of homicidal tendencies I believe I may change if someone presents me with that statement. Bob’s interjections are such a wonderful integral part of the group it is like saying I like Laurel & Hardy except for Laurel. It is just a no brainer situation. If you don’t like Bob’s interjections simply put you just don’t like Bob Wills and the Texas playboys. I can remember an idiot reviewer in Country Music People actually making that idiotic statement. But then again that is not a real surprise for that magazine. $210 10 cds in a box. 150 tracks none less than grand.

T G Sheppard “Partners in Rhyme” $35 2cds + full length dvd This is a fine line up. Great track with Jerry Lee Lewis “The Killer” plus George Jones, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Lorrie Morgan, who took time out between weddings, a great “15 Rounds With Jose Cuervo” featuring Delbert McClinton, a great track with Janie Fricke called “Lonely on Lake Shasta” and even a studio duet with the late Conway Twitty. Mickey Gilley joins TG on the great “Wine to Remember Whiskey to Forget” (though the Cosmic Cowboy will no doubt exercise his right to dispute that title). 19 duets plus a lot of extras.

Dead! The Grim Reaper’s Greatest Hits Ace UK $32
Still Dead! The Grim Reaper’s Jukebox Ace UK $32
Two great volumes that feature a cross section of songs dealing with death, in such a way that they would be ideal companions to Bear Family’s great “S*** Happens” cd. The same use of irony, coincidence and just sheer bad luck make both of these must haves. They are not all country tracks but there are enough country tracks to make it worthwhile even if you don’t play any of the other songs on the cd BUT that would not be the case as they are well put together. On volume one we finally get a master recording of arguably the greatest of them all, Ferlin Husky’s “Drunken Driver” (I still think of the great Stan Freberg’s classic line on the parody of “Dear John” in which he implores “make it more country”… “a little more husky in the ferlin”.) There is (also for the first time from a master) Jack Kittel’s version of the Leon Payne classic “Psycho”. Leon never officially recorded it but even so it is hard to imagine a better version than that of Jack. There are classic lines everywhere: “With this razor in my hand I remove my watch band”. There is the classic crying wolf tale of “Mother, Mother I Feel Sick” as well as original versions of Jody Reynolds’
“Endless Sleep” (more country and less rockabilly than the hit)
and the UK hit “Terry” by Twinkle which would have been a country hit if it had been released in that market. The other well known tracks include Mark Dinning’s “Teen Angel” (again from master tape), J Frank Wilson’s “Last Kiss” and more. 24 in all

The second volume contains Vern Stovall’s version of the oft covered “Long Black Limousine” and it is just grand. But there is a real obscurity that gets my vote and that is Elaine Arthur’s “The Singing Star” which is about a gal from a small town in Okahoma who decides to try her luck in LA. Soon the money runs out so she has to get some work and takes on two jobs. The first sees her having to wear a a “little costume with no top” and the second sees her get a “job at night”. She doesn’t actually meet her maker but the money she sends to her mother in Oklahoma keeps coming back with a note her daughter died in LA; obviously mum not approving of the less moral means of earning a living. Now, is it too late for Tanya Tucker to record a version?! Predictability is another element that enters into these songs especially on Cobey Carson’s “Too Young to be a Widow” which sees her husband head off to the hot rod track to win a prize. Also includes Del Shannon’s eerie “The Prom” and the Beverly Sisters prophetic “Flight 1203”. Dickey Lee is also back with “Laurie”. Another 24 tracks and as with all Ace releases the sound is just great!!.

Mitch Snow “Ballads, Blues & Texas Treats” $30 Third album we have had and another superb one. 21 tracks running well over an hour. The album is on the RGO label which stands for producer Roy G Ownby who is responsible for every single song on this gem. Immediately Roy is elevated to the status of Bob Grady and Mike Headrick. This album has a greater emphasis on the Texas shuffle and a little bit of Tex-Mex finds its way in along the way. Mitch also plays all instruments on this album but it sounds like a full band and he gets a great rhythm throughout, something that is generally a downfall where one man plays all instruments. He has a great voice that reminds in parts of the likes of Ricky Van Shelton, Gene Watson and Marty Haggard. Anyone who has either of the previous two albums rest assured this is better.

Starline Rhythm Boys “Live at Charlie-O’s World Famous” $30 The Starline Rhythm Boys are what BR 549 promised but ultimately only succeeded in producing on the rare occasions (on cd anyway). Starline Rhythm Boys hit the mark 100% of the time and you get 74 minutes of the ultimate honky tonk music. They have a great sense of what is good. They don’t try and overwhelm the audience; there is no substitute for good old fashioned entertainment. The originals are dispersed throughout the album. Al Lemery’s “Drunk Tank” and Billy Bratcher’s (the slap bass man & seemingly the main writer) 3 songs fit in seamlessly with the covers. The songs are drawn from a few areas and all meld together very well. Chuck Berry’s “You Can’t Catch Me” equals for country coolness the old Ernest Tubb version of “Thirty Days”. The album is produced by former High Noon man Sean Mencher who also contributes some guitar. 23 songs all up and the concluding Freddie Hart song “Drink Up & Go Home” rounds things off very nicely.

Curtis Potter – “When the Neon Lights Come On”$30 One day someone is going to do an album with Ray Price, Johnny Bush, Darrell McCall, Curtis Potter, Tony Booth and have Ray Pennington along as a special guest. They should call it …”So You Think You’re Confused”. Basically these guys do all sound different but are firmly rooted in the honky tonk style of the master, that being Ray Price. Curtis’ great new cd is a mix of songs recorded in the 80s (but not on his previous cds) plus some new recordings and honestly the title song with both Justin Trevino and Jake Hooker in cahoots is goose bump stuff all the way!! “I Need Help”, another of the new songs can be seen as a video. The 80s recordings are from the Hillside label and feature the crème de la crème such as Johnny Gimble, Pig Robbins and Buddy Emmons.

Merrill E Moore “The House of Blue Lights” $32 This is a new UK compilation featuring the 50s Capitol artist at the peak of his form (33 tracks all recorded between 1952 & 1957). No-one pounded the keyboards harder then Merrill (who regularly & literally wear out the pianos on which he played). The piano playing is amazingly dexterous. The tracks on here are all on the Bear Family 2 cd set but honestly this is a must have if you don’t have the Bear Family. He intersperses classics such as “House of Blue Lights” and “Down the Road Apiece” with his great originals.

Thom Shepherd “Turning Point” $30 This fine songwriter was responsible for the David Ball gem “Riding With Private Malone” and is a fine singer too. The 16 tracks on this cd have great variety with some ballads crying out for a George Strait cover “the Only Way He Knew How”, whilst a duet with Lisa Shaffer “Your Secret’s Safe with Me” is a cheatin’ song. The uptempo songs also have major label cover …but with class….written all over them.

Johnny Bush “Lillies White Lies” $30 This will be here when you get this. But I would want it just for the fact that the title track is one of the best ever country songs and has to my reckoning only been recorded bu the writer Wood Newton, the great Martin Delray & Bill Arwood, who’s version is more obscure than a $5 steak. 15 trcaks all up and none seem like commonplace. A must!

You Heard It Here First! Ace UK 26 tracker $32 This is another fine cd from Ace and starts with Gloria Jones original of the Soft Cell smash “Tainted Love” through Barbie Gaye’s original of “My Boy Lollipop” and Carson & Gaile’s “Something Stupid”. Don’t forget Joe Jones “California Sun” and Sunny Dae & the Knights original of “Rock Around the Clock”. Then there are real obscurities (you mean these weren’t??) such as The Wild Ones version of “Wild Thing”, The Raindrops “Hanky Panky” and Yvonne Fair’s “I Found You (which James Brown adapted to “I Got You” Waaaaaaa…well that’s what he said!)

Classic Rarities

Being out of print is not always a recommendation to buy but every one on this list does have a strong recommendation of quality attached to it. They are also hard to get and that is what sets them apart. These just don’t turn up everyday. I have indicated the number of each title I have next to it where I have more than one. No number only one copy. I have been collecting these over a period of time and some will just not reappear ever let alone in the near future

Anderson, Bill Greatest Hits Vol. 2 (Varese) $35
15 tracks. Has 2 duets each with
Jan Howard & Mary Lou Turner as
well as the single “Country DJ”.
Anderson, John Wild & Blue (WB) $25 His 3rd & best
album includes a duet with Emmylou.
Axton, Hoyt Spin of the Wheel (DPI). Perhaps his
last album and one of the best with 9
originals, 2 covers of his mother’s
songs (inc. a great version of “Heart-
Break Hotel”) + 3 other covers $28
Barker, Aaron w. Curtis Wayne “Straight from Horse’s
Mouth” (2 copies) $28 BSI label. Both
are famed songwriters as well as
great singers. 12 tracks inc. the 2 big
Barker tracks “Baby Blue” and “Love
Without End Amen” plus the Curtis
Wayne monsters “Love Bug” and “Next
In Line” (both co-writes with Wayne
Kemp). Also includes co-writes with
Dean Dillon & Whitey Shafer. 10/10!!
Bellamy Brothers Rebels Without a Clue (MCA1988)
(3 copies) This Jimmy Bowen album
is easily their best with superb songs
such as the title track and “Fountain of
Middle Age” which fit nicely with their
classic “Old Hippy”. Also in a similarly
witty nostalgia mode are “The Court-
House” and “Andy Griffith Show”. $30
Beverly Hillbillies s/t The movie was only just. I mean how
could anyone emulate TV’s funniest
character, Max Baer Jnr’s Jethro Bodine
or even come close for that matter. But
the soundtrack was & still is a ripper
with new artists (1993 vintage) doing
classic country songs. Joe Diffie’s
“White Lightning” and Lorrie Morgan’s
“Crying Time” are just two of the best.
Mind you I thought Erika Eleniak was
terrific as Elly-Mae. $25
Johnny Bond Very Best (Varese) $35 17 tracker &
the only place you will get “Hot Rod
Lincoln” & the hilarious “Ten Little
Bottles”. Also includes a couple of
excellent rockabilly tracks.
Larry Boone Swingin’ Doors Sawdust Floors $30
Down That River Road $35
One Way to Go $25
2 copies of each. First 2 on Mercury
& last on Columbia. First is very much
George Strait style with original version
of “Beyond the Blue Neon”. Second has
“Everybody Wants to Be Hank Williams”
a classic and the 3rd has a great ballad
selection, “It wouldn’t Kill Me” was
covered by others But Larry is best.
All great esp. if you like Strait & Ricky
Van Shelton.
Browne, Jann It Only Hurts When I Laugh $35 2copy
Perky west coast gal who had 2 albums
on Curb which are both superb. This
1991 features great covers & Browne
originals. If you like Heather Myles…
Conlee, John Blue Highway $28 16 track comp. of
MCA material which largely avoids
the hits.
Fellow Travellers $30 16 Avenue label
went bust so this was around for about
5 minutes. Highlight the wonderful
“Hopelessly Yours” (not to be confused
with the doctor analysing a tropical
disease who told the patient his
progress was “Hopelessly Yaws”.)
Cook, Elizabeth Elizabeth Cook $28 First album which
was a pure country true independent.
Cryner, Bobbie Bobbie Cryner $35 (3 copies) Until
Miss Leslie’s 2008 album of the year
this was the only time I had heard a
gal sing like George Jones. This is
probably the best ever female country
album released during my years in
business. Dwight duets “I Don’t Care”.
Curless, Dick The Drag ‘Em Off the Interstate Sock It
To ‘em Hits of (Razor & Tie) $35 21
great truckin’ tracks from Tower &
Capitol labels.
Dalton, Lacy J Survivor $40 an amazing album; easily
her best & that is saying something given
the overall quality. Her version of Guy
Clark’s “Old Friends” ranks as one of the
Best recordings ever!!!
Davies, Gail Pretty Words $25 The ubiquitous Jimmy
Bowen was in a class of his own at the
end of the 1980s. All songs by Gail inc.
“I Don’t Know Why” which was
renamed “Tell Me Why” & was title
track of Jann Browne’s debut. Top cd.
Davis, Jimmie Country Music Hall Of Fame $28 OOP
gem featuring 16 tracks inc. the 1934
original of “Nobody’s Darlin’ But Mine”
& 1938’s “It Makes No Difference Now”
and of course 1940’s “You Are My
Sunshine” & “Sweethearts orStrangers”
Delray, Martin Get Rhythm $40 1990 Atlantic
What Kind of Man (2 copies) $28 1992
Now a professional tennis coach. The
first commands twice what I have on it
(and in US $) due largely to Johnny
Cash duetting on the title track but
“Lillie’s White Lies” is the standout; a
brilliant song with everything great
about country music being in bucket
loads. Both albums are a must.
Edwards, Stoney “Poor Folks Stick Together: The Best”
$35 Like Charley Pride he was an
African American singing in a genre
where they were a distinct minority.
What made Stoney so great was the
quality of the songs inc. “Hank & Lefty
Raised My Country Soul” & the
Amazing “Two Dollar Toy (Has Made a
Million Dollar Daddy Out of Me)”. His
superb voice is highly reminiscent of
Merle Haggard. 20 tracks.
Edwards, Stoney Just for Old Time’s Sake $90 An impossible find independent album from about 1990.
Ethel & the Shameless Hussies Born to Burn 1988 $30
Another Jimmy Bowen production from
1988 featuring the fabulous Kasey
Jones who came steamin’ & a rollin’
down under in 2008. Sassy female
honky tonk with lots of wit esp. on
tracks such as “One Night Stan”.
Ford, Tennessee Ernie Capitol Collectors Series $35 (2 copy)
This series is simply the best offering
by all the artists who are featured
on it. This 29 track Ernie cd features
all the country boogies, the big hits
(“Sixteen Tons” “River of No Return”
“Mule Train” etc) plus some great duets
w. Kay Starr, Ella Mae Morse etc.
Frickie, Janie After Midnight $25 (2 copies)
Labor of Love $28 (2 copies) Her
3 albums where she adapted the
phoenetic spelling of her real name
“Fricke” were her best. “Labor of Love”
saw her include songs from Steve Earle
& Katy Moffatt & is not to be missed.
Gaddis, Ron Chip Off the Old Block $35 This has
vanished off the planet. Ron was
George Jones band leader and also first
husband of Lorrie Morgan (there’s one
for the “Rich List” tv show…a list of
Lorrie’s husbands). He is a major
talent in his own right. The title track was covered by its writer Vern Gosdin
on “The Voice” cd. This album features
guest appearances from former boss
George Jones (“I Fell Off the Wagon”)
Ex wife Lorrie Morgan (“All Day All
Night Thing”) and Porter Wagoner
(“When the Shiny Silver Eagle Meets
the Great Speckled Bird”). A real gem.
George, Sonny Truckin’ Country $30 14 original songs
from a great deep voiced artist in a
similar style to his classic live album
(“Inside Tennessee State Women’s
Prison”). A great cd.
Gosdin, Vern Alone $35 Hard to get follow up to
the superb “Chiselled in Stone”. This
is pure crying in your beer ballads all
the way. None more full of self pity
than “Alone” itself. Just brilliant.
Haggard, Merle Capitol Collectors Series (3 copies)
Simply the best single cd anthology
of Haggard’s best work. $25
Hardwick, Billy Jnr Too Country $30 Only album and a true
gem. With a voice a tad like Dean Dillon
he wrote 8 of the 10 songs and all have
instant classic. Whenever I played this
someone bought it. It is that good.
Hobbs, Becky All Keyed Up $30 Wrote every song on
the album in which “Jones on the
Jukebox” (a co-write with Mack Vickery
And Don Goodman) is the classic
female honky tonk track.
House, James James House $30 (1989)
Hard Times for an Honest Man$30 1990
Mainly original songs. Both top notch.
Husky, Ferlin Capitol Collectors Series $35 See the
comments for Merle Haggard & Ernie
Ford. This 20 tracker has the hits
“Gone”, “A Fallen Star” & “Wings of a
Dove”. Superb sound too.
Jansen, Frank Lolene $28 Second cd producec by
Mike Headrick. Sold a stack but gone
Now apart from this
Jones, George You Oughta Be Here With Me $35 In
the overall scheme of things George
has not made a lot of albums where
every song is superb. To the contrary
many albums are riddled with hokey
novelties. Not this one though. From
1990 I would rate it the strongest
overall selection of songs George has
ever had on one album. The title track
was from Roger Miller’s superb “Big
River’ whilst “I Sleep Just Like a Baby”
is the closest it gets to a novelty but
clever wordplay overrides. 10/10
Jones, George Friends in High Places $30 Duet album
with all songs recorded specifically.
Includes Ricky Van Shelton,
Vern Gosdin, Randy Travis, Ricky
Skaggs etc but the highlight is probably
his duet with Shelby Lynne on the Paul
Overstreet song “If I Could Bottle This
Up”. She could have been anything.
Jones,George The Battle/Memories of Us (Koch) $30
Two 70s album on single cd.
Jones, George Live at Dancetown USA $55 Amazing
album superbly recorded which was
on Ace UK label but has been deleted
10 years or so, 26 tracks and over an
an hour running time and in great
stereo sound. Like the Ernest Tubb
below (also from 1965!) this is amazing
and George runs through things he has
written (“Window Up Above”/ “Ragged
But Right”/ “Accidentally on Purpose”)
as well as songs by Dickey Lee (“She
Thinks I Still Care”) Harlan Howard,
Melba Montgomery etc. Although not a
regular “Jones boy” Buddy Emmons
joins the band for this set. Also Don
Adams (not Max Smart!) acts as the
leader of the Jones’ Boys & duets with
George on Melba Montgomery’s “We
Must Have Been Out Of Our Mind” as
well as a couple of his own leads.
Just remembered the classic Jones’ line
“We’re gonna take a short liquor-
mission I mean intermission”!!
Kane, Keiran Find My Way Home $30 rare post
O’Kanes pre Kane-Welch album.
Lauderdale, Jim Planet of Love $28 First album from
1991 on Warner Brothers.
Logan, Josh Somebody Paints the Wall $60
Superb 1988 Curb album. He embodies
the spirit of the wondrous Mel Street.
Amazingly good album.
Louvin, Charlie 50 Years of Making Music $30 Early 90s
album with superb guests including
Waylon, Charlie Daniels, Tanya Tucker,
Melba Montgomery, George Jones etc
but the best is Willie on “This Darn
Pen” and most people agree it is one
of the very best duets Willie ever did.
Lyda, Jacob Three Times the Charm $30
Here We Go Again $30
Amazing fresh faced vocalist and these
2 albums from Bob Grady Records
capture the honky tonk style superbly.
McCarters The Gift $35
McCarter, Jennifer & McCarters Better Be Home Soon $25
(2 of each) equally as good but the
first is very very hard to get. Jennifer
McCarter was given top billing on the
second but the harmonies are the same
& slight bluegrass tinged songs are ace!
McDaniel, Mel Rockabilly Boy $30 1989 Capitol gem
with some superb tracks inc. “Reverend
Luther & The Madam” and “You Can’t
Play the Blues in an Air Conditioned
Room”, a huge personal favourite.
McEntire, Reba Oklahoma Girl $40 2cds 2ith booklet &
slip case. 40 Mercury tracks when she
was a real country artist.
McQuaig, Scott Scott McQuaig $30 Again an album with
Jimmy Bowen hallmark and superb as
you may expect. Where did he go??
Dave Loggins “My Friend the Bottle” is
a classic honky tonk song.
Mandrell, Barbara No Nonsense $25
The Key’s in the Mailbox $25 Sweet
Jiminy!! Both superb Bowen production
jobs from 1990 & 1991 respectively.
Martin, Mario Keep it One the Country Side $60 Ok,
this is the greatest mystery I have ever
contended with. This superb 1991
album featured great songs and a great
singer who reminds of Ricky Van
Shelton but was only 17 at the time!!!
Everybody loves this and it is as rare as
they come. James Stroud produced.
Mensy, Tim Stone By Stone $25 1990 CBS album by
equally fine writer, singer & guitarist.
Nice Bob Montgomery production.
Moffatt, katy The Greatest Show on Earth $28
This was the original issue but was
Withdrawn when Ringling Brothers
Claimed ownership of the title. It is
The best folk country album we have
ever had; Katy & Tom Russell have
never done a true duet album but
this is a worthy substitute!!
Moffatt, Katy Midnight Radio $25 A close second
And Katy & Tom actually do a true
Duet on “Hank & Audrey”. Wow!!
Montgomery, Melba And Norma Jean: First Ladies of
Country. A compilation not duets. 12 by
Norma Jean and 10 by Melba inc. the
amazing “No Charge” $28 (2 copies)
Morse, Ella Mae Capitol Collectors Series $35 21 tracks
with a big band R & B flavour but also
country. Best ever “Cow Cow Boogie”
Mowrey, Dude Honky Tonk. $28 Young dude, Dude has
the look of a 15 year old (he is older)
but what a voice & a superb Jimmy
Bowen production & choice of songs.
Nelson, Willie A Horse Called Music $35 1990
The Promiseland $30 1986 Two
of Willie’s absolute best both out of
print for years.
Newbury, Mickey Frisco Mabel Joy $30
In a New Age $30 both out of print.
Fine but decidedly eccentric artist.
O’Kanes Tired of the Running $38 Second &
best album from Keiran Kane & Jamie
O’Hara is also hardest to get. Blind
accordionist Jay Spell is superb.
Paycheck, Johnny Survivor $30 (2 copies) Nearing the
end of his career this indie cd is as
fine as anything he ever did.
Poe, Michelle Just One of the Boys $40. Hard to
believe this perky blonde’s album
was never released.
Price, Ray Sometimes a Rose $25 His last CBS
album highlighted by the superb
“Not a Dry Eye in the House”
Rabbitt,Eddie Jersey Boy $25
Ten Rounds $25
Radio Romance $28 early 90s gems
Ragged But Right Great Country String Bands of the
1930’s $30 18 tracks superbly
remastered & featuring likes of Riley
Puckett, Gid Tanner, J E Mainer etc
Rausch, Leon Close to You: A 20 Song Salute to
the Music of Cindy Walker. Although
known as arguably Bob Wills best
post Tommy Duncan vocalist this also
has more than western swing. What a
superb bunch of songs too. $25
Robertson, Kathy Hillbilly Down: To Roy Nichols With
Love $30. Rather eccentric West Coast
singer who has assembled a superb
bunch including James Intveld, Rick
Shea, Katy Moffatt & MerleHaggard!!
Sahm, Doug SDQ 98 $55 A blink & you will miss it
gem as the record company went out
of business shortly after release. It is
right up there with his “Return of
Wayne Douglas” cd and he keeps it
pretty much country all the way. Great
version Tom Russell’s “St Olav’s Gate”
Sahm, Doug Return of Wayne Douglas $30 what a
Gem…what a man,
Sasaki, Hank Songs from My Heart $28. certainly a
unique artist. Saw him do “Cowboy
from Japan” and I got goosebumps.
That’ll teach me to stand so near the
air-conditioning duct. Great!
Schneider, John You Ain’t Seen the Last of me $35
As we say, looks like a pretty boy &
sings with the best of them. Jimmy
Bowen produced.
Scott, Jack Capitol Collectors Series $35 See
comments on other volumes this series.
A true must have,
Sears, Dawn What a woman Wants to Hear $28
1991 gem. Great tracks all. Went on to
be Vince Gill’s touring support.
Seeley, jeannie Greatest Hits on Monument $25 Inc.
the monster hit “Don’t touch Me”
Shafer, Whitey I Never Go Around Mirrors $30
Shafer, Whitey So Good So Long $30
Classic songwriter is also a classic
Lefty style vocalist.
Shaver, Billy Joe Restless Wind 1973-1987 $30
18 classics Razor & Tie. A must.
Simpson, Red Best Country & Western Truck Drivin’ Singer $30 Wordy title but 20 classic
out of print Capitol tracks including
“I’m a Truck” & “Highway Patrol”. Not
much diff ’tween Red & JuniorBrown.
Staley, Karen Wildest Dreams $28 Half a surprise as
half produced by Jimmy Bowne and half
by Tony Brown. Includes the upbeat
“He Thinks He’s James Dean”
Springfield, BobbyLee All Fired Up $35 An absolute rip
snorter. Crazed man who apparently
got arrested for climbing over the
White House fence in order to visit the
President, presumably Ronny Regan. But
his honky tonk style which includes the
original “Hank Drank” is grand. Also
includes a brilliant version of Eddy
Arnold’s “What’s He Doing in My World”
with intro by Eddy hisself!!
Sweet, Ron Ten in Tennessee $40 A member of our
Indie Hall of Fame. Ron’s lone album is
full of honky tonk gems of the highest
order. 10 tracks ranking with the best
Norman Wade, Vernon Oxford, Johnny
Paycheck or whoever you would like to
mention. However “I Play Haggard”
which cleverly alludes to Merle’s songs
to paint a picture of the complete honky
tonk dead beat is the equal of any track
recorded in our favourite sub-genre.
Thompson,Jeff Jeff Thompson $50 This was going to
be the first Arista country cd even
before Alan Jackson’s “Here in the Real
World” but it was never released which
is hard to believe. Great voice and
songs of which “The Greatest Man I
Never Knew” precedes Reba’s by
several years and absolutely kills it
dead. Semi rockabilly feel on several of
the uptempo songs. Great all the way.
Marsha Thornton Maybe the Moon Will Shine Tonight $30
Excellent 2nd cd & better than the self
titled first (which goes for nearly twice
as much mainly due to its Patsy Cline
stylings). Less Patsy & more Marsha!
Tubb, Ernest Live in 1965 $28 A gem of a live show
which apart from being superbly
recorded is also a great way to hear ET
at his peak. It is like being in the
audience. 20 tracks and a great band
with Cal Smith & Jack Greene.
Tyson, Ian Old Corrals & Sagebrush $25 (long out
of print Bear Family issue 70 great mins
Wagoneers Stout & High $35
Wagoneers Good Fortune $35
1st & 2nd from 1988& 1989 by this great
Texas group featuring Monte Warden.
If you like the Mavericks up tempo stuff
You will love these.
Wagoner, Porter In Person $35 (Koch) Out of print. 17
tracks & it features Norma Jean.
West, Speedy &Jimmy Bryant For the Last Time $28
Very hard to find Step One label.
Whitley, Keith I Wonder Do You Think Of Me $35
Kentucky Bluebird $30
Tribute Album $25
He had the world at his feet with a
voice as good as anyone has ever had
but a blood alcohol reading of .470 saw
him die as the first of these albums was
completed. Still a landmark cd with
honky tonk songs galore which were
sadly not just part of the guise. If you
fail to be moved by “Tennessee
Courage” when you consider his history
then there is something wrong.
Kentucky Bluebird is compiled from a
bunch of sources and includes a couple
of historic snippets. A must though.
The Tribute album has a great cast
performing Whitley songs & includes
Alison Krauss’ massive hit “When You
Say Nothing at All”. Also includes 4
otherwise unavailable Whitley songs
including a duet with Lorrie Morgan.
Wild Rose Breaking New Ground $25
Wild Rose Straight & Narrow $28
Wild Rose Listen to Your Heart $30
Fantastic upbeat all gal group with Pam
Gadd on lead vocals & Wanda Vick on
guitar & just about everything else.
Kind of a bluegrass supergroup playing
Hard core country….superbly.
Williams, Tex Vintage Collection $35 20 tracks and
includes what was Capitol Records first
million seller (any genre) in “Smoke
Smoke Smoke That Cigarette. Includes
The Western Caravan many of whom
Had a co-existence with Spade Cooley.

Honky Tonk Classics

Mainly independent and a lot out of print. They are all classics. Nothing pretty or sassy just dealing with the true elements of country music, things which have a certain taboo to the mental midgets who dictate what is supposed to be (but obviously isn’t) “country music”. All these are $20 unless noted. By the way if you see something more than $20 in here grab it without hesitation.

Watson, Dale Blessed or damned contains the
classic “A Real Country Song”, a
stage favourite. The greatest
artist to emerge in the 20 years I
have been in business. It is like
Merle Haggard has been cloned
Spiritually anyway. Dale’s voice
is the equal of Haggard & his
material beyond reproach.
Watson, Dale I Hate These Songs
Watson, Dale People I’ve Known Places I’ve
Watson, Dale The Truckin’ Sessions
Watson, Dale Whiskey or God
Watson, Dale Every Song I Write Is for You $18
Wayne, Dallas Here I Am in Dallas A short half head behind Dale. Dallas is to GeorgeJones what Dale is to Haggard. “The stuff Inside” sees his deep deep voice well to the fore tell us“The bottle wouldn’t kill you it’s the stuff inside”. Wow. “Not a Dry Eye in the House” with
an amazing steel guitar intro by
Jay Leach. He is equally adept on the ballads & the upbeats which
are always just as country.
Wayne, Dallas Big Thinkin’ “Ol 45s” (can kill you) is a great track in which the
song reminds him of the gal he
has lost!! “She’ll Go Down in Honky Tonk History” is a classic
Wayne, Dallas I’m Your Biggest Fan The title
track may be the only tribute to a stalker…the singer being that
person. Amazingly quirky!! “Crank
the Hank” is about a jukebox (in a

An indie superstar in our books anyway. Just superb and all have the hallmark of the man we consider the king producer of indie labels in Mike Headrick.

Caught in the Webb A Tribute to Webb Pierce $20
Wow! What a line up. Dale Watson, Mandy Barnett, Rosie Flores, BR549, Willie, Dwight, George Jones, Emmylou etc 21tks
Mama’s Hungry Eyes Tribute to Merle Haggard $25 Long out of print and all thriller no filler. Vince Gill’s “Farmer’s Daughter” is just brilliant as is Emmylou’s version of the title. Clint Black sounds scarily like Haggard on “I Take a Lot of Pride in What I Am” 13 great tracks.
Red Hot & Country Red Hot & Country $25 Always in scarce supply and eagerly sought. The highlights include the Mavericks doing “Matchbox” with both Duane Eddy & Carl Perkins. It is even better than it sounds. And the 2 Johnny Cash tracks (“Folsom Prison”…with Brooks & Dunn and a solo version of “Forever Young”) are amazing. Even then Mark Chesnutt’s “Goodbye Comes Hard to Me” has one of the greatest country vocals ever recoded!!) 17 tracks all great.
Rick Rock Deluxe ; Musical Tribute to the American Truck Driver. 16 great tracks of all recordings only found on this album. Features legends such as Buck Owens and Red Simpson (a
great duet with Junior Brown) and also includes Kay Adams (with BR549), Del Reeves (with Jim Lauderdale), Steve Earle, Bill Kirchen, Nick Lowe etc. $25
